Exodus 4:18-31 Notes: Moses Returns to Egypt

Section 8: Moses Returns to Egypt – Exodus 4:18-31

Theme or topic of this section
God Knows How He Wants It Done- He Wants It Done Right
Moses, Get Your Ducks In A Row
Sons and Brothers

Some interesting points
The expression “Israel is my first-born son”
- It is symbolic.
- refers to the group of people whom God chose.
- The first-born will carry on – will inherit.  Egyptians, however, will be cut off from inheriting.

Circumcision
- Moses is to be the leader, so he needs to keep the covenant with his son (setting a good example).
- blood is protective (foreshadowing of the blood over the doorways at Passover).

Here is one person’s explanation of the circumcision in 4:24-26

This is by no means the only explanation, and if you are curious I encourage you to read several commentaries on this passage.
